WELCOME TO THE SQUEEGEE DEMO!
-----------------------------

This is a demonstration version of a new and exciting product
designed to make working with Windows easier than ever before.
The name of this product is Squeegee and as you might expect from
its name, Squeegee is designed to provide a cleaner and more
efficient way to interface with Windows - allowing Windows to
really shine! Once you've used Squeegee, you'll wonder how you
ever got along without it.

What does Squeegee do? Squeegee combines aspects of the Program
Manager and File Manager, as well as many new features, into one
easy-to-use program.

* Squeegee allows you to easily launch any of the program items in
your Program Manager groups with a single menu selection. This
menu system can be accessed at any time without having to stop work
on what you are currently doing by switching to another window.

* This same menu system can also switch you to any other task's
window with another simple menu selection. In either case,
Squeegee reduces a multi-step time-consuming process into one
simple menu selection. This menu system can be easily and
completely customized to suit your individual tastes.

* Squeegee's Quick Filer provides a simple, understandable way to
perform file manipulation, launching, and searching functions.
The key to this file management utility is its simplicity and the
  time-saving shortcuts it provides.

* Squeegee's Run dialog box is a handy and more powerful replacement
to using the Program Manager's "Run..." menu item. Among other
things, it maintains a history of the most recent commands you've
typed so you don't need to retype them in the future.

* Squeegee provides a unified approach to modifying your file
associations and also adds its own more powerful file associations
which allow more flexibility in launching documents and keep track
of which directories have been most recently accessed so you can
get to them more quickly in the future.

* In addition, Squeegee contains a host of little features that make
Windows ever so much easier to use like, for example, displaying
the current time in the upper-right corner of the currently active
  window.

As this is a demonstration version of Squeegee, certain features
have been disabled. However, you should be able to get a good feel
for how Squeegee can benefit your day-to-day Windows activities.

If you have a printer you may want to print this README.TXT file
since it contains information useful for navigating your way around
Squeegee once the demo is running.

This section describes the basics of how to use Squeegee. It
provides enough information for you to navigate your way around
Squeegee and see the benefits Squeegee can provide to you.

If you are a proficient Windows user, you may no doubt discover many
features not covered in this section. All of these are are covered
in detail in the manual and online help provided with the retail
version of Squeegee. The body of the manual is divided into both a
tutorial section and a reference section to accommodate both
novice and expert Windows users.

STARTING SQUEEGEE
-----------------

Typically, when Squeegee is installed in a user's system, it is run
automaticly every time you start up Windows. Since this is a demo,
you will need to start Squeegee manually by running it from the
Program Manager. You will find it in the "Squeegee Demo" group.
Just double-click on the "Squeegee Demo" program icon to get started.

Immediately after running, Squeegee examines your Program Manager
program groups and items so that it can update the Squeegee menu.
This ensures any modifications to your program groups are reflected
in Squeegee's menu system.

SQUEEGEE MENU
-------------

There are several ways to make the Squeegee menu appear:

  1. Clicking on the small Squeegee icon in the upper-left corner
     of the currently active window
  2. Clicking on the Windows desktop with the ALT key held down
  3. Double-clicking on the "Squeegee Demo" icon visible on the
     desktop
  4. Pressing the hot key combination CTRL-ALT-S

(All of the above mouse clicks use the LEFT mouse button.)

Once the Squeegee menu appears, you will see many items in it in
this order:

  Options:
This submenu gains you access to other features and dialog
boxes of Squeegee. It also shows the current time, date,
    free memory & resources.

  Tasks:
This submenu lets you jump directly to another task's window.

  Quick Filer:
This menu item opens the Quick Filer window (see below).

  Run:
This menu item opens the Run dialog box (see below).

  Drive C:
This menu item is an example of a directory menu item.
Selecting it presents a submenu containing all the files and
subdirectories in the drive's root directory. You can then
either launch a file or choose a subdirectory. Any number of
your favorite directories (not just the root directory) can be
    added to the Squeegee menu.

  Program Groups:
These are your Program Manager program groups listed in
alphabetical order. Selecting any group shows a submenu
containing its program items. Choose a program item to
launch it. Running programs this way is much quicker since
you don't need to first find the Program Manager window,
search among all the program group windows, and then finally
    select the program item.

TASK SWITCHING MENU
-------------------

This menu presents a list of all the currently open windows. You
can then choose which window to jump to with one menu selection.
This is much quicker than using the Windows "Switch To..." or "Task
List" dialog box.

The task switching menu appears as a menu item "Tasks" in the
Squeegee menu (above) or can be accessed independantly in one of the
following ways:

  1. Clicking the right mouse button on the small Squeegee icon in
the upper-left corner of the currently active window
  2. Clicking the right mouse button on the Windows desktop with the
     ALT key held down
  3. Pressing the hot key combination CTRL-ALT-T

(All of the above mouse clicks use the RIGHT mouse button.)

CONFIGURATION DIALOG BOX (Hot Key: CTRL-ALT-C)
----------------------------------------------

When you first install Squeegee, it preconfigures the Squeegee menu
for you. This is a good starting point, but if you want to take
full advantage of Squeegee's powerful menu system, you can use the
Configuration dialog box to change the Squeegee menu to reflect
your personal work habits.

Basicly, the left side of the Configuration dialog box is used to
choose a program or file to install in the Squeegee menu. The other
side of the dialog box is a list box which represents the Squeegee
menu currently being editted. To edit the menu items inside a group,
double-click on the group menu item. To get back to the top-level
Squeegee menu, double-click on the drop down list control above the
Squeegee menu list box until it reads "Squeegee Menu".

Press the "Install" button once you have chosen a file to install.
You will then be presented with various "Attributes" which you can
then edit (or simply press "OK" to accept the default values.) The
item will now appear on the Squeegee menu list box. If you later
need to change the menu item, you can select it and then press the
"Attributes" button.

Pressing the "Search" button brings up the Search dialog box. You
can search for programs or files on your hard drive by specifying
multiple search criteria (i.e. name, size, date, etc...) A common
use would be to find all programs on your hard drive by specifying
*.EXE as the File Name criteria.

The "Cut" and "Paste" buttons allow you to move menu items around in
the Squeegee menu. Alternatively, you could "drag" items up and down
the menu while holding down the mouse button.

The "Sort" button is used to sort menu items alphabeticly.

The "Tools" button allows you to add items other than programs and
files to the Squeegee menu.

  Directory:
Instead of adding individual files to the Squeegee menu, you can
have Squeegee scan a whole directory and present it as a submenu.
For example, if you have a directory where you store all your
letters, you could add this directory to the Squeegee menu -
loading any letter from that directory would then become a
    simple menu selection.

  Divider:
Adding a divider allows you to visually separate related menu
items. The initial Squeegee menu has several dividers separating
    its various menu items.

  Group:
Groups can contain programs, files, or even other groups. When a
group is selected from the Squeegee menu, its contents are shown
as a submenu. Use groups to organize your Squeegee menu into
    related programs and files.

  Project:
Projects are like groups except that when a project is selected
from the Squeegee menu, everything inside the project is loaded
at once. This makes it a simple matter, for example, to load up
a report and any supporting graphics/spreadsheets - all with a
    single menu selection.

  Run:
You can also add any arbitrary command line to the Squeegee menu.
Anything you find yourself typing frequently using the Program
Manager's "Run..." menu item would be a good candidate.

ASSOCIATIONS DIALOG BOX (Hot Key: CTRL-ALT-A)
---------------------------------------------

This dialog box allows you to view (and edit) all of your file
associations in a single sorted list. An association tells
Windows which program to run when opening a file by looking at
its extension. For example, the TXT in the file LETTER.TXT can
indicate that NOTEPAD should be run when opening the file.

In addition to normal Windows associations, this dialog box allows
you to add the more powerful Squeegee associations. Instead of
associating a file to a command line, Squeegee associates the file
to one of the programs already installed in the Squeegee menu.
This makes it easier to create associations as well as providing
a way for Squeegee to remember the ten most recently used
directories. This makes it a snap to get to these often used
directoies from the Quick Filer or other dialog boxes in Squeegee.

PREFERENCES DIALOG BOX
----------------------

This dialog box allows you to customize various aspects of Squeegee
to suit your personal preferences. The more important preference
items for purposes of this demo are:

  Squeegee Menu Font:
Choosing a smaller font here lets you squeeze more items on a
    single menu.

  Desktop Click Qualifier Key:
If possible, you might want to uncheck the "Alt" key. This would
allow you to access the Squeegee menu when clicking the desktop
without having to first hold down the ALT key. Some programs
(such as Norton Desktop for Windows) use clicks to the desktop
and therefore require a qualifier key to be used so that no
    conflicts with Squeegee occur.

  Hot Keys:
You can change the default hot keys that Squeegee uses if they
are already used somewhere else in your system.

QUICK FILER WINDOW (Hot Key: CTRL-ALT-Q)
-----------------------------------------

The Quick Filer window provides an easily understood way to
deal with file management. All the traditional file manipulation,
launching, and searching functions are accessed via a graphical
button bar.

Quick Filer shows directories in either single or dual view modes.

Mode I (single view) shows a single list of files (lots of them).

Mode II (dual view) shows two side-by-side directories which makes
it easily apparent where files are coming from and going to when
  copying and moving files.

One nice aspect of the Quick Filer is that it is linked to the
Squeegee menu in such a way that getting to frequently used
directories is a snap.

RUN DIALOG BOX (Hot Key: CTRL-ALT-R)
-------------------------------------

This is a handy dialog box similar to the "Run..." menu item in the
Program Manager; however, as can be seen, Squeegee's provides more
functionality. One nice feature is that the last ten commands run
are remembered so you don't have to retype frequently issued
commands.
